Instrukteur belê in die vaardighede wat mag van armoede breek

Die volgende merkwaardige berig het onlangs in die PE-Express verskyn:

Driving instructor ploughs back (and pays it forward) into community - By Bettie Giliomee

IN trying to break the cycle of poverty by giving motivated and talented young people a step up in life, a local driving school instructor is giving young people free learners’ and driving lessons, to equip them with a skill which is often a requirement in most workplaces and which many people cannot afford to obtain. And all Ferdy Jacobs, owner of Ice Breeze Driving School, asks from these young people in return, is that they will one day help someone else in need, in any way they can, “even if it is just cutting an old person’s lawn”.

Although he is giving the instruction free of charge, Ferdy is appealing to sponsors who will be willing to help his students with their learners’ and licence fees. The total amount needed for the learner’s licence is R312 (test, photos and certificate included) and for the driver’s licence R540 (test, photos and certificate included).

Ferdy, a married father of two, says he also comes from a disadvantaged background and knows what it is like to struggle. He was retrenched by a big local car manufacturer in 2009, after which he started his driving school.

Ferdy, who is offfering his free driving instruction to five people at the moment, started his Ice Breeze Plough Back campaign in 2010, when he read in a daily newspaper about Erica House of Safety’s first matriculant, Cleo White, and how funds were raised to help him go to his matric farewell.

“I learnt that he wanted to become a police officer and for that you need a licence. So I went and offered to give him classes and helped him to obtain his licence,” said Ferdy.

“Still feeling the need to help someone else I ended up helping a former convict, currently on parole, to get his licence also free of charge.

“Currently I am helping kids from Jacksonville who look past their circumstances and aim high to reach the goals they have set for themselves. All three are students at NMMU studying law, accounting and pharmacy respectively,” said Ferdy.
